The 2005 Erdener Pralat Riesling Spatlese Alte Reben feinherb – from a recently-acquired portion of this great site, and with only 19 grams residual sugar and a moderate 12% alcohol – is quite successful. Banana, pink grapefruit, and rose petal aromas lead to a rich and substantial, soft but very clear-fruited palate mingling peach, banana, and grapefruit. The finish is caressingly soft but persistently juicy. Schmitges says he wants to push this bottling closer to trocken in coming years, but I can’t see why, unless it would be to reap commercial advantage from getting all the way to legal “trocken.” Also recommended: 2005 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett trocken ($ unknown; 85), 2005 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese trocken ($ unknown; 84).Importers include: Dee Vine Wines, San Francisco, CA; tel.
