Still a dark ruby garnet color with only a slight amber edge, some sweet curranty fruit made its appearance as the 1986 Merlot hit the palate. But then the tannin and acidity sear the palate, crushing what little fruit remains. This wine possesses a foursquare, monolithic, one-dimensional character that provides little joy or excitement. It will undoubtedly hold for another 5-6 years, but it will not improve. The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in California, and the other in June, 1996, in Baltimore.
