Produced from 80 year old vines, Saouma’s 2003 Clos St.-Denis reveals aromas of grilled oak and immensely ripe dark fruits. Medium to full-bodied, it is grapy, expressive, as well as crammed with black cherries, spices, and notes of tar. Its long finish reveals copious quantities of ripe tannin. This wine was bottled with high levels of CO2 (a natural by-product of malolactic fermentation) and will require decanting if opened in the next 5 years. Projected maturity: 2009-2018.
Note: The information on acidification reported in the article on Maison Lucien Le Moine’s Cote de Beaunes was incorrect, according to director/winemaker Mounir Saouma. This negociant firm did not acidify any of its acquired wines, stresses Saouma, the figures quoted in my earlier article were his assessments of “typical” 2003s.
