Sadly, this winery is producing less impressive wines than it did in the past, when their Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and even Petite Sirah were big, bold, all-American-styled wines. Today, tasters are more likely to find Burgess offerings to be streamlined, compact, compressed wines that appear to be the products of conservative oenology rather than beverages made for maximum pleasure. I have rated the 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection as high as 85, but at present it merits an average score. It is lean, hard, tannic, and lacks flavor ripeness, depth, and extraction. The high tannin and tart acidity give the wine an attenuated style, especially in view of the deficiency of fruit. Readers should not hold their breath waiting for any miracles to occur.
