The 2008 Montefalco Rosso Riserva, a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot is delicious. It is also the most overlooked wine in the Caprai range, as most of the focus here is on Sagrantino. Firm tannins support a core of expressive dark red cherries, earthiness, tobacco, smoke and licorice. The 2008 needs another year or two in bottle to start softening. Elements of rusticity will always remain, but there is no shortage of personality. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023.
Marco Caprai remains one of the leaders in Montefalco. This year, Caprai has a new wine, a single-vineyard 2007 Sagrantino that emerges from a parcel next to a pond that gives these vines a unique micro-climate.
