The 2003 Fontalloro (100% Sangiovese) is perhaps slightly weightier and fresher than the Rancia. Made in a more flashy and opulent style, it exhibits a primary quality to its super-ripe red fruit, with notable intensity on the palate and plenty of grip on the finish. It will benefit from several years of cellaring to integrate its new oak. Fontalloro is made from a combination of vineyards located in both the Chianti Classico and Colli Senesi appellations. The presence of sand in the latter terroir gives Fontalloro its more open personality. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015.
