The 2007 Fiano di Avellino Exultet is one of the most viscerally exciting wines being made today in southern Italy. The bouquet alone is fabulous, with heady, exotic sensations of white truffles, lime peel, sage and flowers that meld seamlessly into a plush expression of white floral fruit. Clean, minerally notes round out this fabulous wine. The Exultet is not particularly typical of Fiano di Avellino, rather it stands alone for its unique personality. Readers who can find the Exultet should not hesitate, it is magnificent. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017.
Consulting oenologist Luigi Moio is one of the most influential people in the viticultural landscape of southern Italy. In recent years, Moio has begun to garner significant attention for the wines he makes at his own property, Quintodecimo. These rich, textured whites and reds are quickly establishing themselves among the elite. Quintodecimo fans can look forward to a new single-vineyard Taurasi from the Cersito vineyard, a due south parcel on volcanic soils, which will be released in 2013.
