A remarkable effort, the 1996 Chardonnay was given lees stirring and a full malolactic fermentation in 100% new oak. According to Cipresso, it was produced from extremely low yields. Complex, with a smoky, Meursault-like nose of roasted hazel nuts intermixed with butter and tropical fruits, the wine is full-bodied, rich, and long. It is a noteworthy effort that could hold its own in a blind tasting of top-class white burgundies. Drink it over the next 1-3 years.
