There are only 6,000 cases of the 1988 Rioja Reserva Coleccion Personal. This is a broad, complex, tobacco, mineral, vanillin, and curranty-scented and flavored wine with layers of rich, opulently-textured fruit, medium to full body, a wonderful, expansive sweetness from ripe grapes (not sugar), and a lush finish. It should drink well for 5-7 years.The Marques de Grinon is not content to rest on his laurels. Barrel samples of the 1994 Syrah suggest this is going to be a blockbuster Syrah that should make some of the Rhone Valley's top producers nervous. Approximately 4,000 cases will be made. The outstanding barrel samples were smoky and rich, with that wonderful bacon fat and cassis character. Readers should also be on the lookout for a new offering from the Marques de Grinon produced from a vineyard in the Ribera del Duero, not far from Pesquera.
