The 2004 Hallgartener Jungfer Riesling Kabinett – harvested early from the original core site, the highest in elevation and most quarzitic portion of the present day Jungfer – displays lovely delicacy and minerality. The nose is of lemon, pear and red currant. The citrus is delightfully juicy and engaging and the pit fruit and chalk mineral character seem to waft over the palate. The 2004 vintage seems to accentuate the almost Mosel-like virtues of Jungfer: brightness, florality and minerality. The wine’s 60 grams of sugar are barely in evidence as it finishes fine, bright and lip-smackingly salty.
