The 2000 Amarone Mazzano is perhaps more structured than the Campolongo, yet it, too, exhibits fairly advanced leather, meatiness, iron and spice overtones. It does offer excellent persistence on the palate, but stylistically it is an austere wine that lacks the sweetness of the Campolongo. It is best consumed over the next few years. Sturdy and intense, with spicy raisin and oak on the nose, enveloped in floral and mineral notes, with a hint of coffee. Full-bodied and very firm, with lots of luscious, spicy dried fruit character driving through the long finish. Classy. Give it time.
