Tasted at the Domaine Engel tasting in London, the 1971 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru was the highlight of an extraordinary retrospective and further testament to this being a legendary Burgundy vintage. Clear in color with commensurate bricking on the rim, the bouquet is utterly beguiling: red cherries, cold wet limestone, dried orange peel and bay leaf. The delineation and focus is exceptional, as fresh as the day it was born. The palate is supremely well balanced with perfect acidity that lends this Grands Echézeaux a sense of symmetry. It gently fans out with red cherries and minerals on the pure and tensile finish. This bottle flirted with perfection--an astonishing, heavenly wine made by Pierre Engel. Tasted October 2016.
