A lighter version of the 2000, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape La Bernardine exhibits more strawberry and cherry fruit. Made in a pretty, but understated style, it possesses restrained fruit flavors, and surprising lightness for a Chapoutier offering. This wine doesn't reveal that much of itself on the nose, showing just teasing hints of leather and cherries. But it oozes across the palate with dense, chocolate fudge flavors that carry cherry and dried spice notes. Rich and supple in the mouth, it finishes long and nuanced.
