Always one of the classiest, most complex Rhone Ranger offerings is Linne Calodo’s Sticks and Stones. The 2003 (60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre) exhibits lovely aromas of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, licorice, and hints of lavender, spice box, and earth. Well-structured, with abundant fruit, tremendous freshness, and full-bodied, authoritative flavors, this 2003 resembles some of the great vintages of Chateauneuf du Pape’s famed Chateau Rayas. A tour de force in winemaking, it showcases the potential of the Paso Robles region. It should drink well for a decade.
As I have written over the last several years, Linne Calodo is a name to take seriously as it represents a reference point for what can be achieved in California’s Central Coast.
