The estate’s 2004 Camelot is a cuvee of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that is aged in French oak. This deeply-colored wine reveals blueberry jam, cassis, wild herbs, new leather and licorice, all of which come together in an intense, weighty style. Most of the wine’s appeal is up-front as the tannins clamp down a bit on the close. This polished, sleek red could use another year in bottle to smooth out the tannins, but it is already very tasty. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014.
This estate, located in the province of Trapani, is remarkable for the quality it achieves considering the total production approaches 5 million bottles. To put that number in perspective, it is roughly 50% of the total production of Barolo in a generous year.
