The 2008 Chardonnay comes across as soft and dilute, with little in the way of real character. The logic for making Chardonnay in Maremma, especially at this price, escapes me. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2013.
Monteverro is one of the most exciting young properties I have come across in a while. The vineyards are located in Capalbio, in the province of Grosseto. The estate was founded in 2003 by Georg Weber, a young Swiss man inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux. The 2008s are the first releases from Weber’s superstar team, which includes Michel Rolland and Jean Hoefliger of Alpha Omega in Napa Valley. With the exception of the Chardonnay these are all interesting wines. Prices are high for a debut vintage, but the investment required to make wines at this level is no doubt high as well.
