The 2013 Big Tree Pinot Noir was picked on September 13 from the estate's 13- to 15-year-old vines and after fermentation in three-ton open-top fermenters, it was raised in French oak for 17 months, 38% new wood. This is bestowed an earthy, forest floor-scented bouquet, touches of flint and damp undergrowth infusing the red brambly fruit. The palate turns volt face: much smoother and silky in texture with vibrant, lush red cherry and strawberry fruit laced with white pepper and hints of dried blood. This is a very complex Pinot Noir that is an absolute treat, a cerebral wine that will give a decade's worth of pleasure.
