The dark ruby/purple-colored 1992 Corton Rognet offers up a gorgeous nose of herbs, smoke, black-cherries, and underbrush. Full-bodied and well-structured, with massive layers of fruit, tannin, and glycerin, it requires 4-5 years of cellaring; it is one of the handful of 1992 red Burgundies that will last for 20 years.
The three 1992 offerings from young Bertrand Ambroise reviewed in this issue are atypically masculine, big, forceful, dense, tannic wines that behave more like 1990s than the soft 1992s. None is ready for prime time drinking as they all require cellaring of several years.
