From relatively low-lying parcels in the direction of Brochon, Charlopin's 2006 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes mingles lightly-cooked cherry and strawberry with rich red meat stock, vanilla, dark chocolate, brown spices, and a chalky note that gains prominence as one approaches the finish. The tannins here are impressively and unusually refined for the vintage, permitting the sweetness to go unchallenged in a satisfyingly long finish. This should hold up well for at least 5-6 years. Philippe Charlopin is known for his outgoing personality, which applies also to the wines of his domaine spread over more than two dozen appellations, an astonishing nine of which are grand crus. Elevage is long here, and when I last tasted his 2006s with Charlopin in Spring 2008, none had yet been bottled.Various importers, including The Country Vintner, Ashland, VA 23005; tel.
