This consistent under-performer makes noises every year about racheting up the quality level, but I have yet to see anything from their top of the line wines that merits the interest of serious connoisseurs. They simply do not deliver the aromas, flavors, or textures one would expect from a winery with nearly unlimited resources as well as some of Napa's finest vineyards. With this in mind, it was a surprise to find one of their lower level wines, the 1999 Chardonnay North Coast, to be an attractive, tasty effort. It possesses lively tropical fruit, fine underlying acidity, medium body, and a clean finish. While not profound, it is a step in the right direction. Consume it over the next 1-2 years.
