Even more youthful (as well as inky colored), the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations Gaston Philippe is a spectacular blend of equal parts Grenache Syrah and Mourvèdre, from vines planted in 1925, that was raised in 100% new French Oak. It offers gorgeous notes of cassis, crushed rock, licorice and oak to go with a full-bodied, structured, still dense and backwards profile on the palate, which surprisingly is still 3-4 years away from full maturity. This beauty won’t satisfy the staunch traditionalist, yet is nevertheless a fabulous Chateauneuf du Pape that will have 25 years of overall longevity.
