A big, rich, full-bodied effort, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations Gaston Philippe checks in as a blend of equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre that was raised all in new oak barrels. Blackberry, toasted spice, licorice, vanilla bean and assorted meaty qualities all show in the bouquet, and it’s concentrated, structured and firm on the palate. As with the base cuvee, it still shows its modern élevage and has plenty of sweet oak showing. Give it another 2-3 years and enjoy bottles through 2030.
