The 1996 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is still tight, and I would not be surprised to see it gain an extra point or two with a few more months of bottle age. The wine is fermented with native yeasts, given 14 months sur-lie aging for 21 months in barrel, and bottled unfiltered. This is a medium to full-bodied, expressive, light gold-colored Chardonnay that offers attractive lemony, pear, citrus, and honeyed notes along with plenty of smoky oak. Purely made, with a good texture and a spicy finish, it will improve for another year, and last for 2-3, possibly longer.
This offering is made by David Ramey, formerly at Dominius and Chalk Hill, and currently the winemaker at the new Rudd Cellars on Napa's Silverado Trail.
