The 1990 red Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits the power, richness, and structure of a top-notch year. Backward, with an interesting and penetrating bouquet of blackberries, spring flowers, earth, and herbs, in the mouth, there is plenty of fat and tannin. More backward than most 1990s, the wine appears to have more elegance and balance than many of the larger-scaled wines from this vintage. If the finish had been longer, it would have merited an outstanding rating. I do not see it being fully mature for at least 4-5 years; it has the potential to last for two decades.
