Looking at the Grenaches, which clearly struggled in the cooler vintage, the 2011 Grenache Black Oak, which was fermented with 100% whole cluster and aged in neutral oak, comes from sandy soils and wasn’t harvest until mid-November. White pepper, underbrush, kirsch and dried flowers all emerge here and this medium-bodied, savory Grenache has edgy, firm tannin on the finish. Drink 2014-2018.
This is a great lineup by Chad Melville. Neutral oak, no SO2 until racking, varying degrees of whole cluster, native yeasts and a very cold cellar are the name of the game here and these are have individual, unique profiles. They also remain reasonably priced given the quality. These are all impressive wines and well worth checking out!
