Ponzi produced no regular cuvee of Pinot Noir in 1990, but, fortunately, there are 700 cases of the 1990 Pinot Noir-Reserve. Once again it is a super wine, as well as the most likely candidate for "the Pinot Noir of the Vintage" in Oregon. It displays a deep, saturated, dark ruby color, and a dramatic nose of black fruits, herbs, smoked game, and toasty oak. The wine is rich, medium to full-bodied, with super purity of flavor, and a long, opulent finish. For fans of Ponzi who have followed the bevy of superlative Pinot Noirs he has produced, the 1990 is closer in style to the 1988 than the 1989. However, it is more tannic and structured than either of those vintages, and needs 5-8 years of cellaring. Quite impressive!
