A terrific example of an interesting blend is the 2003 The Outsider, a combination of 72% Zinfandel, 20% Mourvedre, and 8% Syrah, all from north-facing vineyards. More structured, tannic, and backward than The Problem Child, it exhibits superb density, a rich, full-bodied, layered palate, copious black fruits, a cool climate texture, good acidity, and firm tannin. Give it 1-2 years more years of bottle age, and drink it over the following decade.
As I have written over the last several years, Linne Calodo is a name to take seriously as it represents a reference point for what can be achieved in California’s Central Coast.
