The 2013 Duas Quintas was recently seen in Porto, but since it is now in the USA and we now have a vertical, let's take another look. It is the latest offering in the brand. It is a blend of 43% Touriga Nacional, 37% Touriga Franca and dollops of other grapes for the remainder (Tinta Roriz, Tinta da Barca, Tinta Barroca, Sous?o, Tinto C?o and Tinta Amarela). About 30% of the juice was oak-aged in well used barrels and 20% aged in well used tonels; the rest in stainless steel. This has put on a surprising amount of weight since I first saw it, fleshing out and seeming very serious now. Gripping on the finish, it has a real backbone and some intensity, yet it is also perfectly balanced and approachable right now (if you must). The oak shows just a bit, but it is integrating well already. The fruity little wine from a few months back seems to be gaining seriousness in front of our eyes (or, at least mine). Given the tricky 2013 vintage, this is a pretty respectable performance that increasingly looks downright impressive for the regular Duas Quintas. As the vertical this issue demonstrates, these do age well, but let's be a bit conservative, keeping in mind that all the wines in this vertical were obtained from the winery. That's pretty good provenance. Not everyone will duplicate that.
