Cropped at 1.2tons/ha and matured for 12 months in 25% new French oak, the 2007 Ata Rangi Pinot has a wonderful nose soars from the glass: wild strawberry, plums and dark cherries all vying for attention. Great definition. The palate is medium-bodied, very harmonious with great structure. Broody dark fruits, a hint of soy, edgy towards the finish. Complex and beguiling, this is a standout Pinot Noir.
Ata Rangi remains one of New Zealand’s outstanding producers and their wines continue to win admirers from around the world. As I was unable to visit Martinborough this year I did not taste their full range but report on two new releases since my report in WA176.
