The 1997 Cuesta Dulce (216 cases), made from small-grained Tempranillo, is produced from microscopic yields of .8 tons of fruit per acre (or about a pound of fruit per vine). The wine was aged for 14 months in new French oak before being bottled unfiltered. An opaque purple color is followed by licorice, blackberry, cherry, and currant fruit, a layered texture, superb extract, enormous weight and richness, and a huge, tannic, muscular finish. It represents a remarkable achievement for the vintage. While it has enormous potential, it requires 3-4 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020.There is little value to be found from Allende, but the quality of the wine is impressive.Importer: Jorge Ordonez, Fine Estates From Spain, Dedham, MA; tel.
