The 2001 Les Galets Rouges, a tank-fermented and aged blend of 60% Syrah, 35% Grenache, and 5% Mourvedre, is available for a song. Bursting with notes of blackberries, cherries, and earthy, peppery fruit, it possesses a supple, lush texture, terrific purity, and a lovely mouthfeel. This crowd-pleaser is the kind of dry, fruit-driven, personality-filled red that the country's bistros should be serving by the glass. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years. This is an exceptional value. If readers have not yet discovered the wines from this excellent estate, it's about time.
This is one of my favorite estates from Costieres de Nimes, the sun-drenched appellation south of Chateauneuf du Pape, as well as one of France's top sources for wine values. It is also an area where some of America's cutting edge importers have been extremely successful in finding top notch Costieres de Nimes estates (i.e., Robert Kacher and Peter Weygandt). Mourgues du Gres produces an excellent rose (usually one of my summer slurpers). Readers should be watching for the release of the 2002, although given the vintage conditions, it may not be as good as the 2001.
