The 2008 Irpinia Aglianico Terra d’Eclano is all class and elegance. I can’t think of any other winemaker who has managed to tame the rustic qualities of Aglianco while at the same time expressing so much varietal character and pure nuance. A blast of dark fruit, smoke, game, tar, tobacco and cured meats hits the palate in this exceptionally polished, fabulous wine. Quintodecimo’s Taurasi is pricey, but the straight Aglianico isn’t too far off the mark in terms of quality. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.
Proprietor Luigi Moio continues to set the bar high – very high – at his small property in Campania. Moio’s rich, textured whites and reds are among the most exciting wines being made in Italy today. I never miss a chance to drink them, and neither should you.
