The 1997 Rioja Crianza (100% Tempranillo bottled after 14 months aging in a combination of French and American oak) is an excellent, nearly outstanding effort, no small achievement in a vintage such as 1997. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a gorgeously sweet nose of strawberry and cherry jam intermixed with dried herbs, smoke, earth, and vanillin. Medium to full-bodied and opulently-textured, with a tannic finish, it requires 1-2 years of cellaring, and should age well for 10-12 years.
