Unquestionably, my favorite Rochioli Pinot is the 1998 Pinot Noir East Block. The grapes were harvested at around 26 brix, hence it tips the scales at nearly 15% alcohol. Aged in 100% new oak, it reveals no pruniness or late harvest characteristics. Rich, with glorious levels of black cherries, raspberries, cassis, and blackberries, this dense, full-bodied, superbly concentrated Pinot Noir is pure and seductive. Sweet tannin in the finish complements the high level of glycerin and alcohol. This Pinot may turn out to be among the finest produced by Tom Rochioli. It should drink well for a decade. The best chance of obtaining any of these wines is to get on the winery’s mailing list, or at least on the waiting list to get on the mailing list. Tel. (707) 433-2305; Fax (707) 433-2358.
