The 1997 Pinot Noir East Block is made in the mold of the Little Hill cuvee. It is a full-throttle effort that, despite its wonderful richness and density, has retained its elegance and lushness. The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple. In the mouth, the wine displays medium to full body, outstanding flavor extraction, and a long, 30-second finish. The wine possesses adequate acidity and moderate tannin, but these components are virtually buried by the precocious fruit and ripeness. This spicy, black fruit-scented and flavored Pinot should be at its best with another 6-12 months of aging, and will evolve nicely for 5-7 years.Tom Rochioli's Pinot Noir are among the most thrilling being produced in northern California. They represent the amazing progress the state has made with this fickle, easily bruised varietal.Tel. (707) 433-2305; (707) 433-2358
