The 2006 Erdener Pralat Riesling Beerenuslese represents golden berries from the lower and botrytized berries from the upper portion of Schmitges holdings in that great site. Like a viscous, caramel- and sassafras-laced orange liqueur, this saturates the palate impressively. A white raisin-studded orange cream sickle is also suggested. Ripe acidity and CO2 struggle to alleviate the sheer sweetness engendered by enormously high residual sugar. After the 10-12 years that will be required to see this wine's sweetness come into better balance, it will probably evolve comfortably for 15-20 years more - but with what degree of complexity?A measure of the advantages of a small, ambitious family winery with lots of local connections, Schmittges was able to pick his entire crop in just nine days.Importers include: Dee Vine Wines, San Francisco, CA tel. At only 6% alcohol, this is extremely honeyed on the nose—almost caramelized in its intensity. This is amply reflected on the palate, where its flavors are ultrasweet, like melted peach preserves and honey. Lingers terrifically on the finish. ——J.C.(12/15/2008)—— 94
