The 800 (500ml) bottles of 1997 Tokay-Pinot Gris Sonnenglanz Selection de Grains Nobles are the result of a painstaking sorting process. Even after considerable coaxing its muted nose only displayed massive sweetness and hints of botrytis-laced fruit. On the palate, this show-stopper is pure, dense, opulent, elegant, full-bodied, and immensely concentrated. Layer upon layer of plums, flowers, anise, red fruits, apricots, peaches, passion fruit, and spices are abundant in its viscous personality and syrupy finish. It is splendid to sip, but has the potential to age effortlessly for 30-40 years.Importers: European Cellars (Eric Solomon), New York, NY; tel (212) 924-4949.
