The Pommard La Refene is dark ruby-colored and exhibits an expressive nose of blackberries, and minerals, with traces of licorice. This expansive, broad, super-ripe, medium-to-full-bodied, and dense wine is filled with extremely sweet red and black cherries, raspberries, and cassis. Its long and focused finish displays supple tannins. It is a delicious Pommard that should be at its peak between 1999 and 2005.

The qualitative resurgence at Domaine Latour-Giraud, described in my report on the 1996 White Burgundies (Issue #116), is dramatically evident with their red Burgundy offerings. This wine is impressive.
