The 2006 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is another big, powerful wine, but here there doesn’t seem to be enough density and sheer material to stand up to the oak. Dark wild cherries, leather, licorice and sweet spices add a measure of complexity, but not enough to fully compensate for the heavy handed approach to cooperage. I prefer the straight 2008 Vino Nobile despite the superiority of this vintage, at least on paper. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
