Along with the 1990, the 1994 Rioja Reserva is one of the best wines I have tasted from Baron de Ona. The color is a dark ruby/purple, and the wine offers up sweet berry fruit intermixed with toasty oak and spice. Lush yet elegant, with medium body, low acidity, and an up-front, juicy, succulent appeal, it shoulds turned out to be. Made from 105-year old Grenache vines, this could easily be a Spanish Chateauneuf du Pape ... if there were such a thing. One major difference between this effort and most Chateauneuf du Papes is that 50% of the oak barrels in which this wine was aged were new.
