Proprietor Giorgio Conterno’s 2003 Barolo, a medium ruby, is a soft accessible wine with sweet dark fruit, spice and menthol notes. Made in a generous style, this poised, medium-bodied wine offers excellent length, well-integrated tannins and plenty of harmony. It is drinking beautifully today and is easily one of the top normales of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2013. Paolo Conterno is an excellent source for sleek, stylish Barolos from the Ginestra vineyard in Monforte. Ginestra may not have the prestige of some of the better known vineyards in the zone, but I find it consistently yields Barolos of uncommon structure, power and balance. At press time Conterno was in the process of changing importers.
