The outstanding 2001 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cairanne Cuvee Maximilian is a blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah with a dollop of Carignan. The Mourvedre is aged for six months in barrique before blending. A saturated dense purple color is followed by Mourvedre's tell-tale aromas of tree bark and new saddle leather intermixed with cassis, blackberries, and cherries. Deep, full-bodied, structured, sweet, and expansive, with excellent delineation as well as length, this substantial Cotes du Rhone should drink well for 5-6 years, possibly longer. outstanding value.
