I had the privilege of tasting a 2000 Gruner Veltliner Loiser Berg Trockenbeerenauslese that is only now coming to market. This wine has an extraordinary aroma like tangerine liqueur laced with lanolin, vanilla and caramel. In the mouth, sweet nut paste character accented with vanilla and lanolin notes of new wood leads to a long finish. Floral and sweet herbal essences, sweet citrus, and a nip of cress all speak of Gruner Veltliner-typical, while lanolin, vanilla and caramelized pit fruits remind one of the ripeness of the vintage and the wine’s origin in a small, new barrique.
