Along with dark fruit aromas, the 2012 Chianti Rufina Riserva presents uncommon tertiary aromas of dark spice, natural rubber and petrol. The bouquet requires a minute or two of vigorous swirling to reach a point of smoother integration. In the mouth, the wine is silky and polished. It might flesh out further, but at this point it remains informal and lean. Grapes are harvested from 60-year-old Sangiovese vines and a few plants of ancient indigenous varieties such as Ciliegiolo, Mammolo and Abrostine are found planted within.
