The Tokay-Pinot Gris Vieilles Vignes exhibits a polite, medium straw color, and a lavish nose of buttered nuts, honey, and waxy scents. Super-rich, with an unctuous thickness that suggests low yields, the wine is full-bodied, dry, and capable of lasting for at least a decade. In the hands of the top Alsatian producers, Tokay-Pinot Gris is a dry, full-bodied wine offering a huge perfume of buttery, creamy, smoky fruit, unctuous, intense flavors, and awesome power and palate presence. It is generally a richer, fuller wine than even the largest-scaled grand cru white burgundies. It gets my nod as the Montrachet of Alsace. When made by a producer who emphasizes unmanipulative winemaking and extremely low yields, Tokay-Pinot Gris can reach unprecedented heights of richness and complexity. The wines of Zind-Humbrecht are imported by Wine Markets International (Mitchell Nathanson), Woodbury, NY and by Kermit Lynch Wine Merchants, Berkeley, CA.
