The 2005 Heritage Pinot Noir is a selection of the best nine barrels, a tribute to David Herd who founded the first commercial vineyard in Auntsfield in the 1870s. The 2005 is blended with the only remaining bottle of 1905 and has a seductive, nuanced nose of brambly black fruit, wild strawberry and loganberry with superb definition. The palate displays superb concentration, very cohesive with notes of raspberry, dark cherry and plum, leading to a tense, engaging minerally finish. Outstanding (though unsure how much the 1905 contributed to the blend!) Drink over the next 5-8 years. Auntsfield is one of New Zealand stalwart producers that can trace its roots back the 19th century and they presently farm vineyards in the Wairau Valley. They have an interesting portfolio full of character and occasionally, great quality. No known US importer.
