Phelps' Merlot program is coming of age. Approximately 10% Cabernet Sauvignon is included in the blend, and the wine is aged in primarily French oak with a touch of American. About 30% of the barrels are new. The 1998 Merlot is a lean, dry, sinewy wine. It is a reasonably good effort in this tough vintage. The color is a healthy dark ruby. The bouquet and flavors offer scents of coffee, dried herbs, berry fruit, and new wood. Medium-bodied and charming, but small-scaled, it should be consumed over the next 5-7 years.
