It is time for consumers to wake up and realize that the Loire Valley's micro appellation of Savennieres produces the world's greatest expressions of dry Chenin Blanc. In some vintages these wines possess a Montrachet-like texture and richness. Recent vintages have included a tough year in 1991, an average year in 1992, a very good year in 1993, and a potentially very good year in 1994. 1990, followed closely by 1989 are the two most recent great vintages. The 1994 Savennieres exhibits a nectar-like, honeyed, peach, and apricot-scented nose intertwined with floral aromas. It is rich and medium to full-bodied, with good cleanliness, and enough underlying acidity to buttress the considerable flavor intensity. Young and unevolved, it promises to last for 10-15 years. Chateau d'Epire is one of the best known Savennieres producers. While they do produce a demi-sec, slightly sweet style, this offering is a dry, full-bodied Chenin Blanc.Importer: Europvin, USA, Watertown, MA; tel. (617) 924-7620
