Glatzer’s 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is typical of many successful and experimental projects among Carnuntum vintners. With a refreshingly cool, minty, melon-fruited character allied to a glossy texture and rich substantiality, this wine’s lip-smacking and chalky finish almost suggests it could be at home in Sancerre (provided it were a very ripe vintage!). I hate to show disrespect to the majority of Sauvignons that come my way from many parts of the world, but I cannot imagine preferring the flavors of gooseberry, passion fruit, and even cat pee that predominate in the New World of Sauvignon when a wine like this is available at a modest (ex-cellars) price. Walter Glatzer offers some excellent values in both white and red, on which I have often been remiss in not reporting. I caught up with several of his wines last year.Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300
