The 2001 Chianti Classico La Pieve, quite dark for an all Sangiovese wine, exhibits much raspberry/red currant fruit on its nose along with vanilla and caramel, and the firm, intense flavors are beginning to round off and show some velvet. Serious and well-structured, with ripe black fruit, earthy mineral and a hint of polished oak. Full-bodied, with a relaxed mouthfeel, good fruit, well-integrated tannins and a long, soft, balanced finish. Hard to resist now.
